Commitment to the environment?
A topical blog for once.
As I’m sure you’re all aware, the General Election is being held in
Over the past few weeks, I’ve went to the front door to get the mail and found a whole pile. The few letters this household actually receives have been buried by manifestos from a whole variety of political parties. This actually angers me a little.
Ok, I know all the parties have the right to be heard, allowing the constituents the chance to make an informed decision when it comes to the 3rd of May. This I don’t have a problem with. The sheer volume of information we are being bombarded with is irritating though.
One of the issues which seems to be at the top of the agenda for most of the parties is the environment and how we can help save it. Well isn’t it ironic that any one of these parties is destroying forests in a bid to bring us that piece of information. Judging by the volume of paper that’s been landing on my doorstep, they’ve chopped down millions of trees.
Another annoyance. Fair enough, the parties need to get their information out there but do they have use really glossy paper in the process? If they were truly committed to the environment, wouldn’t they use thin recycled paper? No, they have to waste taxpayers money on something that it probably just going to land in the bin anyway.
In addition to this, single parties seem to be delivering multiple manifestos, one for each candidate. Why not make a small newspaper detailing all the candidates running in that area for one particular party? That would cut down on the loose sheets of paper landing on the doorstep and only one delivery would need to be made per household.
I wonder what it will be like in the future? Will political parties use per manifestos? Perhaps they will campaign via the internet. Fair enough, emailing manifestos may be regarded as spam but it’s a lot healthier for the environment.
