Seven Ages of Rock- grunge
Has anyone else out there been watching the “Seven Ages of Rock” on BBC?
It’s an interesting look at specific time periods in music, discussing the transition into the next age. The program has been on for around 6 weeks now and has covered rock ‘n’ roll, punk, heavy metal, stadium rock and alternative. A whole selection of great artists have been discussed such as the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Bruce Springsteen, and Dire Straits to name but a few.
This week, the program was about alternative rock, focussing on Nirvana and REM (both excellent bands). This program started out fairly upbeat with a montage of clips and interviews showing how both band rose to fame and became friends with each other.
Of course, I think most people out there know how the story ends and this fact made the end of the program really sad.
Part of the performance from MTV Unplugged was shown and yes, it did look like a funeral. This was suggested that this was Kurt’s goodbye. For anyone who hasn’t seen or heard this performance, go get the CD. Very raw, powerful vocals sung with meaning.
The program then went to show some of the news footage when Kurt Cobain died. Jus after that, the BBC asked Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Michael Stipe of REM if they could change one thing, what would they do?
Krist and Dave both said they still wished Kurt was still alive (really sad moment- they both understandably looked rather upset). Michael Stipe basically but he said something I totally agree with- Kurt was moving in a whole new direction and he could have been even greater had he survived.
I think that’s pretty evident when you see the MTV Unplugged episode. Was his music moving in a whole new direction? If it was, I sure would have lied to have heard more from it. Anyone heard the song “You Know You’re Right”? That sounded like his style was changing.
It’s seems when Kurt Cobain died, grunge did too. The fact that his music is still played on tv and radio nowadays is a testament to music of Nirvana itself.
Go on, go buy some Nirvana cd’s.
